News broke last night that Sony is expanding their Spider-Man spinoff movies with fan favorite Morbius! Academy Award winning actor Jared Leto has reportedly signed on as the lead role, with Daniel Espinosa on board to direct.
Sony seems very confident in what’s to come with the soon to be released Venom movie, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down much at all here. Though no details have been released for the actual film yet besides that it exists and Leto and Espinosa are attached, we can expect filming to begin in 2018.
Morbius, The Living Vampire debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #101 way back in 1971, and has since seen a number of mini-series and ongoing runs of his own. Dr. Michael Morbius is a complex yet tragic anti-hero who attempted to cure his own blood disorder, but the experiment failed and turned him into the monster he is known as with a constant craving for human blood.
As you could imagine, it’s pretty tough to be a “good guy” when all you want to do is drink people’s blood all day and everyone with a cape or spandex is coming after you because they are high off of playing Monster Hunters.
In truth, Morbius was one of my favorite side characters in the 80s and 90s, so I’m really looking forward to what Leto and Sony can bring to the table here.
Stay tuned for more news as we get it.
