If you haven’t seen Season 8 Episode 5 of Game of Thrones, “The Bells” – this is your fair warning to stop reading or get spoiled.
There are a great many people upset with the show after the turn of events in S8E5. Danaerys went batshit.
I’ve seen so many posting about how their favorite show has been ruined, etc. etc.
I’m sorry but at what point did you think this was a normal show that followed any traditional story points?
That is exactly why GoT is so good- because in a REAL story, good guys can turn bad… bad guys can have an incredible love story…. the “good” soldiers are still who they are and will kill innocents and rape the women.
There is no Black and White all of X is evil and all of Y is good. That’s not rooted in how anything actually is.
In a realistic setting, there is no guarantee that when you lose everything you love, you’ll be able to hold it together.
The Tragedy of the Song of Ice and Fire… while still one episode to go, is pretty much wrapped up.
It’s the tragedy of Danaerys Targaryen, who persevered through so much, even so as far as to achieve her final goal- yet in the end, after everyone else was taken from her- when she was denied by the man she loved… the final betrayal in a string of betrayals and final loss in a string of losses… she was done- she had had enough.
This shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. Since early in on Dany has promised that she would “Burn their cities to the ground” and phrases like that for anyone who stands in her way. Dany even had a vision back in season two that showed the throne room of King’s Landing destroyed. She has ALWAYS said she would do this, but her fan base was in denial, just like Jon and Tyrion.
This show has been her tragedy, and it also has been the tragedy of Cersei and Jaime Lannister- who first and foremost only wanted to love each other. Yes yes, ew yuk yick gross to the whole thing. But looking at it from their perspective, they were in love. Her father made her marry another, and circumstance set her to rule- she didn’t want that at first- she did it out of necessity because there was no one else left. Through her marriage and after, it was all always about Jaime’s unending love for her. People are all like, ‘Oh I thought he had changed….’
Guys… come on.
They have been lovers for 30 years. They’ve had 3 1/2 kids together. He has been in love and only in love with her his entire life.
You don’t just get over that.
Now I’m not saying she didn’t turn into an evil sadistic bitch… because she did- I’m saying when looking at the story of those two who simply weren’t allowed to be who they were- and their arc together coming into the world and out of it together… it’s a beautiful love story, it really is.
Basically, all of the main characters are wrapped up now;
Clegane bowl happened, and they’re both dead.
Jaime and Cersei left this world in each other’s arms (presumably).
Varys betrayed Dany and got burnt as she promised him he would.
What we have left now are just two questions-
Who will kill Dany and Grey Worm?
What happens then?
Sure, there are little things.. like wondering if we’ll see Sansa or Brienne again- but the main question has always been around who will rule.
For the moment, Danaerys has done it. She’s burned King’s Landing and killed Cersei, just as she’s always wanted to do.
She has WON, the Game of Thrones-
Well… for a few days at least. I mean is there ever really a winner?
