Disney CEO and Chairman Uncle Bob Iger recently announced two Star Wars live action series for Disney’s new streaming service Disney+. Diego Luna will reprise the role of Cassian Andor during the early days of the Rebellion. The Andor series will be a spy thriller set in the Star Wars Universe. Sign me up!
The second series is The Mandalorian and will take place between The Return of the Jedi and the beginning of the First Order. Although it has not been officially confirmed by Disney or LucasFilm, Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, Narcos) will be the lead and joined by Gina Carano (Deadpool).
According to the great folks at LucasFilm the series will “follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.” The Mandalorian will be written and produced by Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf, Chef, etc.) and has announced that Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) will direct episodes.
With the announcement of the two live action series and presumably new Star Wars content for the next 20 years let’s speculate wildly of what other characters we could see get their own series!
I would love to see a WWI trench warfare type series. Imagine a ten episode series of every type of Stormtrooper imaginable in constant battle! Also, a Young Palpatine with Darth Plagueis, Ahsoka, or Qui-Gon Jinn and Count Dooku adventures. The possibilities are endless. Guillermo del Toro has stated that he wants to do a Jabba The Hutt film. Could you image his vision with that character and the Outer Rim?! Goodness.
Author James Luceno fantastic book Tarkin would be a phenomenal bit of source material for a live action series. Using the book it could pull back the curtain and show the life of Grand Moff Tarkin and his rise through the Imperial Ranks. Even if this never happened, I highly recommend this book!
Along the same lines, Claudia Gray’s novel Lost Stars could also be a solid choice. They could have a CW crossover type storyline with a Tarkin series!
If you go to Twitter or REDDIT you will see many posts about Star Wars fans longing for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie starring Ewan McGregor. I would very much be onboard, HOWEVER, I have an alternate idea. How about a Tatooine Obi-Wan Kenobi live-action series?! Instead of a one off, two hour movie, we get many adventures over ten to twelve episodes! What do you say, Nerds?!
A date has not been announced for the streaming service or the premiere dates for the two series as of now. Stay tuned for updates. When I know, YOU’LL know!
